Under the Table, 2019

Collaborative performance with Looksorn

Under the Table is a performative project, referring to a common working status among immigrants without legal work permits due to the complicated visa regulations and policies. Two artists, Coffee Kang and Looksorn, share their experience of working under the table through a one-hour performance where they physically stay under the table and make art. During the performance, Coffee Kang will be working on a painting in correspondence with her O-1 painting series, for which she taught herself to paint, to be included in a show, to fulfill the O-1 visa requirement. Looksorn, as a photographer, will document this questionable job from under a different table. The project attempts to bring attention to the unspoken struggles of immigrants and question the present immigration policies in the States.

The project has been performed at various locations, including Last Projects, Nomad Pavilion, and Spring/Break Art Show.
